Okay, so what do we really do at the SUWC? How can we really help if we're also just a bunch of college students, trying to help our peers? What does "peer to peer" tutoring even look like? We hear you. Writing can be a daunting, loaded process. In all likelihood, every one of us has some sort of negative experience with a piece of writing in their past. Maybe it was a teacher who loved their red correcting pen a little too much, or even a prompt that just wouldn't make sense, no matter how hard you tried. The SUWC gives any student at Seattle University a place to explore, investigate, and be content in not knowing all of the answers right away. As consultants, we get the privilege of peeking behind the curtains of the literary genius that comes out of our campus. We get to learn with and from our peer clients, meeting each and every individual at the point in the writing process that they are in– rather than forcing/expecting everyone to know exactly what to say from the get-go.
Writing Center consultants are not experts per se, but what we do have is a tool that is arguably even more effective in our approach to tutoring: genuine curiosity. Armed with this wonder and excitement about topics ranging from philosophical musings, scienfic explorations, or even criticism about the latest blockbuster, we offer suggestions, resources, and a fresh perspective to all who seek our assistance. Behind the scenes, Writing Center consultants mentor and observe each other so that our learning never ceases to increase in nuance. We share methods, strategies, and a safe environment in which we can hold each other to the highest standard of tutoring practices. Beyond that, we read up on grammar and style manuals, create worksheets, make classroom visits, post advertisements, and hold staff meetings to discuss how things are going in the SUWC. First-year consultants also take part in a 5-credit course that centers on Writing Center methodology and practices. We also study the technicalities of writing including grammar, disciplinary writing style, and resources for developing writing skills. Our practice here is not just to serve our campus as free editors. We are here to act as companions through the journey of creating impactful written work, which includes ensuring an accessible, encouraging, progressive environment for all learners from any ability, background, and discipline. We want to meet you, meet your ideas, meet your excitement– this is a home for you and we are here to welcome you in.
