Hello world! I'm super excited to write this post and hopefully to start a new fun series (if you've ever watched the Try Guys on YouTube, it's like that, but with one woman -- which is me) where I try and actually follow through with "Oh, I wish I could do this" or "I'd love to do that" kind of phrases given the resources I have at home (because I am indeed a College Student™). This is mostly a fun way for me to overcome stress from my responsibilities and the general media, but also because I consider myself a pretty average person. I didn't grow up playing an instrument, or trained in dance, joined sports or choir--I only began doing anything outside of school starting freshman year of high school when I joined drama club. I know it's not healthy of me to compare myself to others (trust me I'm working on it), which is why it's important for me to start acting on my interests now! The first in this hopeful series is: cooking! Fun fact, when I was a wee Kimberly, I wanted to become a chef. I grew up watching the Food Network channel with my mom and looked up to the likes of Rachael Ray or Ina Garten; however, once I was hit with a large dose of reality, I gave up on that dream. Here I am now, a 20-year-old college student who has yet to move out of her parents' place, but fortunate enough to learn basic cooking skills and a hunger (get it?) to improve! I'm not a huge social media mogul, but when I'm on Instagram or TikTok, I definitely am looking at all things food-related and find myself drooling over "vegan dish this" or "simple 5-ingredient that"! So, as a start of this blog post, I'm going to be practicing and then showcasing a couple of dishes that I've come to love and hopefully become familiar with, I won't even need to look at a recipe (like a master chef would)! Soy Garlic Noodles! This one was a fun one! I, admittedly, made this dish during a relatively difficult week and suddenly found myself reaching for the bag of pasta several days. It's definitely a good source of savory comfort and its flavors are reminiscent of Asian cuisine (the sauce is to DIE for). Overall, a hearty dish that will be sure to get your stomach full fast but your heart wanting more! Rating: 5/5 Hong Kong Style French Toast! Surprisingly, I found more sweet dishes than savory, and I, personally, much prefer the latter. But! The video I had seen this recipe for made it look SO delicious I had to try. Granted, the toast is supposed to be more square in shape and unfortunately this picture doesn't do the condensed milk drizzle justice. If you're a big fan of French Toast and want to try something new, this is definitely worth a shot! Rating: 4/5 Peanut Butter, Chocolate Chip, Banana Pancakes! Wow, that's a mouthful. Try saying that ten times fast! For Christmas (hence the Christmas-themed plate) my younger sibling got one of those mini Bundt and Pancake makers and let me say, those are definitely helpful for cooking in a pinch! I love bananas so it was only right that I learned how to make pancakes (no flour needed!). Again, a little too much on the sweet side, but it was hard to resist! Rating: 4/5 There you have it! Three recipes that I've tried over break and were fairly easy to make (as an amateur chef)! You can find these recipes anywhere online, but I found most of these recipes from social media. I am a bit of a biased person when it comes to my rating but when it comes down to it, my stomach was not disappointed. Thanks for coming along with me on this LONG-awaited journey. I'm excited to try new things and see what's in store for 2021!
This has been Amateur Hour with Kimberly! (Cooking Edition). See you soon!
